Assembling the prismatic colours and textures of stained glass, I aim to underscore the power of a collective whole and convey a narrative through mosaic art. My inspirations are derived from distinguished mosaic artists, such as the architect Millard Sheets and mosaicist Jeanne Reynal. Reynal’s assertion has been profoundly influential and compelling, encapsulating my sentiments towards creating mosaic art: “Mosaic, to be real, must be individual, coherent and luminous – the reality fresh and frightening, like every original.”
“Ponsonby Bloom” was conceived as a tribute to the migration of my grandparents and the Pacific Islanders who migrated to Ponsonby and Grey Lynn in the 1950s and 1960s. The Pacific Islanders significantly shaped the cultural landscape of these suburbs, which is still evident today.
